The Bristol to Bath Railway Path runs through Greater Fishponds; from Greenbank exit 17 to the 'Staple Hill Tunnel' at exit 34 and our section of the path is beautiful and makes up half of Bristol's part of the Railway Path itself. We are very lucky and very proud of this path because it offers us all a safe route across Bristol and South Gloucestershire; especially with the new routes connecting to the railway path from various sections of our community thanks to Cycling City and there's now lighting through the Bristol section as well.

Today our path connects to almost every part of the UK but for us here in Fishponds there's quick and easy access to various local destinations especially from the fork at Mangotsfield Station, running past Emersons Green or to Bitton, Saltford and Bath.

If you choose to head towards Bristol Centre which is all down-hill from Lodge Causeway Bridge, then our path connects to various locations including Eastville, St George and Old Market and new routes to Speedwell and Fishponds trading estate via Ridgeway Road playing fields.
Use the official railway path website to plan your journey or discover other options. bristolbathrailwaypath.org.uk

Bristol is the UK's first official cycling city so during the next few years we'll see both Bristol and South Gloucestershire Councils invest in to cycling and safe access routes, but already we have a proud network in place which is continuously being updated and kept safe.
This website will keep you up to date with news and events and they have a very useful links page for all of Bristol's cyclists and those who want to take up cycling as well:
bristolcyclingcampaign.org.uk (see the links page for all options).

Other routes in close to Fishponds include The Dramway, a once horse drawn railway system between Keynsham and Mangotsfield visit: forestofavon.org/dramway.html and visit other routes in South Gloucestershire as well... forestofavon.org/wro.html

Man on a bike

From Fishponds shopping area people can take one of two routes to Frenchay; either through the Frome Valley via College Road (mountain bikes only!) or cycle down Blackberry Hill and at the bottom cycle in Purdown to arrive safely at Frenchay Campus of UWE; Frenchay Hospital; The MOD; BAE Systems; Rolls Royce; AXA or Hewlett Packard.

Bristol is a hilly city so if you would like an electric bike then visit Halfords in Eastgate or Brislington for a free trial and shop around.. Gardiner Haskins or John Wood Cycles in Hanham both offer free trails and lots of shops in the area sell electric bikes.

Wickham Glen

Wickham Glen between Eastville Park and Snuff Mills in the Forest of Avon, Greater Fishponds Section is now complete and offers us a 2nd route in to Bristol town centre from Greater Fishponds via the River Frome trail. Visit Better by Bike for details: betterbybike.info

Our City

The Sustrans Volunteer Wardens help to keep our cycle ways clean and respectable. Our group for Greater Fishponds also cover the wider area from Saltford near Bath to Bristol's Old Market area area. During future events in Fishponds they'll let us know so that we can all participate to keep our area of the path clean. If you would like to be involved regularly then please visit the following website: volunteering-with-sustrans and for the specific Ranger scheme visit:
sustrans.org.uk/support-sustrans/get-involved/volunteering-with-sustrans/volunteer-rangers there are currently about 20 people looking after our Railway Path.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following councillors who have helped to clean up the Greater Fishponds area of the Railway Path by ensuring the removal of graffitti, accessibility and general housekeeping:

Councillor Patrick Hassell
Councillor Lesley Alexander
Councillor Steve Comer
Councillor Muriel Cole

More than half of the Bristol section of our railway path is in Greater Fishponds, exits 17 to 34. There's a lot of caretaking involved!

The Railway Path is a wonderful resource which we can take for granted today but it is largely thanks to local volunteers over 25 years ago! Today this piece of land is raised, the railway line still gets used and where people are standing on the bank is now cycle path and walkway.
